Questions about pregnancy and reproduction are extremely common for young people. When delivering the WISER programme, we get loads of questions about pregnancy, reproduction and families. Learning about reproduction is fascinating. Human beings are amazing creatures and what it takes for a sperm to meet an egg is no easy feat.

The stage of pregnancy and reproduction

The below video explains in detail about the sperm and the egg and how a baby develops during pregnancy. When a sperm from one person and an egg from another person join and implant in a uterus, a pregnancy has begun. There are different ways this process can happen, including sexual intercourse and certain medical procedures. Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks from the first day of a person’s last menstrual period.

Different types of families

When learning about reproduction it is easy to think that there is only one way to form a family. But we know this is not the case. There is lots of different ways to make up a family. Some people are adopted, fostered or live with different family members. Some families can go through a different process to have a baby like IVF (In vitro fertilisation) where they go through treatment to help conceive a baby. No matter what type of family you have your family is unique and even though you might not always get on, your family is there to love and support you. So be nice to each other!

Protection

The topic of protection is something that will be discussed in much greater detail when you reach second level education. However, it is still important to understand how people protect themselves from STIs and pregnancy during sex. From condoms, pills to coils there are lots of different methods of contraception. The below video gives a quick snapshot into the world of protection.

Conclusion

Thank you so much for watching our tutorial on reproduction and protection. Reproduction is one of the most incredible things that the human body can do and there is a lot to take in so don’t worry if you don’t understand it all just yet!
